Aug 1880 – After an unsuccessful attempt to occupy Afghanistan, British forces withdrew. Abdur Rahman Khan became ruler. The prison population went from 1,500 in 1880 to 20,000 in 1896. He killed about 100,000 people during his reign. (History Today June 2014 UK).

1 Jan 1965 – a leftist party called Khalq (masses), was set up under Nur Mohammad Taraki. In June 1967 a second leftist party called Parcham (banner or flag), was formed under Babrak Karmal.

27 April 1978 – Leaders of the combined Khalq and Parcham leftist parties launched a coup. President Daoud Khan and his supporters were killed. The Democratic republic of Afghanistan DRA was set up. The Saur revolution was also Islamic.

5 Dec 1978 – Taraki went to Moscow and signed with Leonid Brezhnev a treaty of friendship and cooperation with the Soviet Union. Soviet military advisers played a role in directing DRA military units in their war against the rebels in the countryside.

15 Feb 1989 – General Boris V Gromov was commander of Soviet forces in Afghanistan. He walked into Uzbekistan on 15 Feb 1989. The Soviets had lost 15,000 lives and 30,000 people were wounded.
